Field report – Montenegro – April 2009

We decided, with some of great colleagues, to visit the Montenegro during a week, hotspot of herpetofauna in Balkans and Europe.

Sunday, June 7 – Go to Dubrovnik (Croatia)

Our first stop was in the beautiful Bay of Kotor, where we spend the night. On the road, our initial findings are DOR: Malpolon insignitus fuscus, Elaphe quatorlineata. We find in the Bay of Kotor Testudo hermanii boettgeri, Pseudopus apodus and Anguis fragilis colchicus (now Anguis graeca).

Monday, June 8 – Heading to Kolasin

We take the road to reach the valley of Mrtvica. Several stops on the road allow numerous discoveries: Algyroides nigropunctatus, Dalmatolacerta oxycephala, Podarcis muralis, Podarcis melisellensis, Lacerta trilineata, Lacerta viridis, Anguis graeca, Pseudopus apodus, Natrix tessellata, Hierophis gemonensis, Vipera ammodytes, Testudo hermanni. We decide to spend the night near the Biogradska lake where we observe Rana graeca and many huge Bufo bufo.

Tuesday, June 9 – the mountains of Kolasin

Tuesday is the day dedicated to Kosalin mountains, where can be found the rare Vipera ursinii macrops. Before leaving on expedition, a ride around the lake allows us to discover Natrix natrix persa (some melanistic individuals), and a large Zamenis longissimus.

The long way in the mountains of Kosalin allows us many observations: Ichthyosaura Montenegrina alpestris, Bombina variegata scabra, Bufo bufo, Rana temporaria, Zootoca vivipara, Anguis graeca, Vipera berus bosniensis … but probably too much heat will prevent us from finding Vipera ursinii… The next time!

Thursday, June 11 – Ada

On Thursday morning, it’s starting to Ada, in the extreme south of Montenegro. The area is absolutely beautiful, and the density of reptiles is not recommended for the heart of herpetoguy. We observe Pelophylax shqipericus, Pseudopus apodus, Podarcis melisellensis, Lacerta trilineata, Natrix natrix persa, Natrix tessellata, Malpolon insignitus fuscus, Vipera ammodytes, Emys orbicularis hellenica, Testudo hermanni boettgeri! Unfortunately, No Typhlops vermicularis, and Dolichophis caspius and Platyceps najadum observed are DOR…

Friday, June 12 – National Park Lovcen

The aim of our last day is visiting the Lovcen park and his famous Dinarolacerta mosorensis. The search will be long, but the result will be good. We also find on the road Lacerta viridis and Dalmatolacerta oxycephala.
Finally, we must return to Croatia, where we will fly to the way back. Meanwhile the hour of departure, we try a last exit not far from the airport: good idea! We will observe Pseudopus apodus, Lacerta trilineata, Podarcis melisellensis, Dalmatolacerta oxycephala, Hierophis gemonensis and the discreet Zamenis situla!

    Bonjour !

Juste pour signaler une petite coquille à la fin du report.
Il me semble que le Dinarolacerta mosorensis en photo est légendé Dalmatolacerta mosorensis 😉

    Mathieu.
